Dressage Clinic

There will be a dressage clinic on July 12th from 6:30 to 9pm at the home of Daria Aldrich on Hyde Rd just east of 27. It will be limited to 15 riders but auditors are welcome. The cost is 10.00 for the riders and 5 dollars for the auditors. Parent who bring kids do not pay to audit the class. The class is open to all riders of any age including adults. I would like to know so if they could call and leave a message if they are riding that would be great. They may call Jan at 517-626-2367.

4-H Equine Mandatory Meeting

Don't forget that the Clinton County 4-H Equine Mandatory Meeting is this Thursday (the 21st)
at Smith Hall at 7:00p.m.

At this meeting the program for this year will be outlined as well as
rules and any changes or highlights. Also, other opportunities will be
discussed.

This is the meeting for clubs to sign up to work shows, keep in mind
that if your club doesn't sign-up for a show that is convenient, than
one will be assigned.
The process to apply for a State 4-H equine delegate for the state 4-H
horse show will be explained.

The 4-H equine program is a very involved program and it takes everybody
to pitch in a little to make a successful program for everybody.

The 4-H Equine youth team will be having a bake sale on Thursday night
and you will also have an opportunity to purchase your back tag for the
year. Pattern books and 2011 calendars will also be available for purchase.

Horse registrations are due on May 1st to your Organizational Leader
with your 4-H enrollments. I want to remind you that everyone can
register up to 4 horses. Keep this in mind in case you may need a
back-up. If you only have one horse, what would you do if something
happend to it? Register your back-up now so your covered for the just
in case situation.

The 2011 Horse Registration form is posted at the top of the right side of this page. This form is due to your organizational leader by MAY 1ST. Each child can register up to 4 horses - even if you only plan on showing one horse at fair, it doesn't hurt to sign up a second as a back-up. Each club can also register 2 club "floaters."

County Hippology Test

The County Hippology test will be held Sunday, February 27 from 10 am to 12 pm. The awards will be held at 1:30 pm (attendees must leave for lunch to allow for the tests to be scored). Test questions will come from the Horses and Horsemanship, Horse Science, and 4-H Rule books, and the lab kits. All study materials can be obtained from the Extension office. The county test is required if you wish to compete in Hippology at the 4-H horse jamboree at MSU on April 16th.

Trail Clinic March 19, 2011

Mandatory Leaders Meeting

There will be a mandatory horse leaders meeting on Monday, February 7, at 6:30 pm. It will be held prior to the regular monthly EAC meeting, in the EOC room at the Courthouse. All clubs need to have a representative there who is prepared to sign their club up to work at shows this season. Everyone is welcome to stay for the EAC meeting, but it is not required.

The 2011 show dates are set - show bills are posted to the right.

The new 4-H Youth Team is looking for members. This group is open to any 4-H youth who wants to get more involved. Come to the Courthouse February 7 at 6pm for the next meeting.

There are signatures required for proof of activities, so make sure you get a copy ASAP so you can get credit for everything you do.

Important info from November EAC meeting

Thanks so much to Applebee's in St John's for letting us host our pancake breakfast there this past Saturday, and thanks to all 4-H leaders and members who sold tickets - we raised over $600 dollars! That will go a long way towards hiring good judges and getting good awards for next show season.

Next Tuesday, November 9th, is a MANDATORY horse leaders meeting. Parents and youth are encouraged to come also. We will be assigning show dates for clubs to work - EVERY CLUB MUST WORK A SHOW, and if we don't get enough volunteers, we will eliminate some shows. Bring your calendars and be prepared to commit to one of the dates, which will be similar to this past season's schedule. The meeting is at 7 pm at Smith Hall (CORRECTION - THIS MEETING IS AT THE COURTHOUSE).

The Youth Team is putting on a bake sale at TSC in St John's on Black Friday (November 26) from 6 am to noon. Youth are needed to work two-hour shifts, and baked goods are needed. This counts for State Show delegate applications (but only if you show up and work, just dropping off baked goods DOES NOT count), and it raises money for our shows and awards. The Youth Team is hosting a dance on Saturday, November 13, from 7 to 10 pm at Smith Hall. Youth ages 9 to 19 are welcome. We still need adult chaperones - if you are available please contact Lynda Kissane (989-666-3589).

Equine Youth Team and Teen Dance

Clinton County is forming an Equine Youth Team. Join and be a part of making the Clinton County 4-H Equine Program great! The first meeting is October 27, 7pm at the Courthouse.

The first thing on the agenda is planning the upcoming Teen Dance on November 13th. This event is put on by the youth, for the youth, so bring ideas. This dance is a fundraiser that will help to pay for judges and awards. Cost will be $5 at the door, and includes pizza and pop.

Applebee's All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast - October 30, 2010

The EAC has teamed up with Applebee's restaurant in St Johns to host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 am to 10 am on Saturday, October 30. The cost is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 9 and under. Proceeds of this 4-H Horse Program fundraiser will go towards awards, judges and upkeep of equipment. Ride-A-Thon

The Ride-A-Thon is a Fundraiser for the Clinton County 4-H Equine Advisory Committee. It
is from 10 am to 2 pm at the Sleepy Hollow State Park on Sunday October 24th and open to Clinton County 4-Hers and their families. Pre-registration is required at $5 per rider which includes a hotdog, chips and pop. (Nonriders can get the same for a donation.) Please
pre-register before October 15th by calling 989-682-4354 or filling out the following online form. (We must get sufficient registrants in order to go ahead with the ride and must be able to contact you in case we need to reschedule.)

Riders are asked to get pledges from people before the ride (either flat rates or per mile
ridden is fine). You need to bring a MINIMUM of $5 in pledges.

There is an additional state park entry fee (about $4) if you do not already have an annual sticker for 2010.

Riders 19 and under must wear a helmet.

Miscellaneous notes about Fair

I'm sure this list will be missing plenty, but here's what I can think of that everyone needs to remember for the next couple weeks.

-Fair set-up for horses is this Thursday, starting at 6:30 pm (not Tuesday like the Fair Book stated). Bring gloves and be prepared to work!

-Club canopies MUST be set-up on Saturday

-There is a CHANCE that we may not have shavings available at the fairgrounds (the extension office is working on getting some). Just in case, be prepared to have to bring your own. Hopefully we will know more by Thursday.

-Horses can come in between 6 and 9 pm on Sunday

-There will be Equine leader's meetings every morning at the announcer's booth before the show starts.

June EAC Newsletter

The EAC met on Monday, June 7th. Included in this newsletter there will be information that you need to know.

Have you checked with your leader about which shows your club is working? If not, why not? Please check with them. Each club will need to work at least two shows and help at a show at the Fair. If your club has only signed up for one show, Diane Schaibly will be contacting your club leader and letting you know which shows are still available to work. Remember that these shows pay for the judges at the Fair. When Diane calls please be gracious and sign up to help at another show.

Also a reminder about the concessions: if your club decides not to donate the meat like hot dogs or sloppy joes please let the EAC know ahead of time so that we can make arrangements for having these items there. The EAC makes sure that there are candy bars, pop, water, chips and condiments already there. The concessions make a lot of the money that helps to pay for the awards. Your clubs are always welcomed to donate items.

As a reminder if you are interested in being a State Show delegate you must have your application into the Extension office by July 1st. You at that time will also need to turn in any of the volunteer forms that you have accumulated. We are allowed 11 delegates this year and one alternate. You must show in the discipline that you qualify in. If you qualify in more than one discipline than you can choose which one you want to ride in as long as there is still a delegate spot available in that discipline. You may only ride in one discipline at the State Show.

The EAC Youth are making window decals. These will be available starting at the June 19th show. There are several different designs to choose from; pleasure horse head or speed horse head with the words English, Western or Speed on them. They are $10.00 a piece. We have printed a limited amount of these so get yours before they are gone.

There will be a silent auction for a quilt that Carla Green has donated. It is very pretty so plan on seeing it at the June 19th show. This is also the date for the silent auction to be held. If you see the Green family, make sure you thank them as they spend a lot of time and effort supporting your horse program.

Remember the next Pleasure Traianing Show is this Friday, June 11th. There are some cool series prizes so make sure you come and try for these. It is a come as you are show so no show clothes allowed.

Are you planning on coming to the Ride-A-Thon on June 15th? It is being held at the St. Peter Lutheran Church parking lot. You can check out the blog for more information. This is a fundraiser to help pay for the Fair Judges so please get those pledges. You can still ride if you don't get any pledges, the cost is $5.00 and includes a hot dog, chips and a drink. You can arrive at 5:30 and the ride ends at 9 pm. If it is hot there will be a water station about halfway throught the ride for both rider and horse. This ride is on dirt roads. Remember that if you are 19 years and under you will need to wear an ASTM-SEI approved helmet. Waivers will be available for those over 19 that choose not to ride in a helmet; however we are encouraging all to wear a helmet. It only takes one trip and a rock to get hurt.

Our next Open Pleasure Point Show is June 19th and June 20th which is a closed Speed Point Show. We are still looking for help at the June 19th show. If you can help for an hour or so we would appreciate the help.

There will be a Sportsmanship nomination box at the Fair. This is your chance to nominate another exhibitor that you think exhibits good sportsmanship towards others. You will need to tell us why you think this person should get the award. Be looking for the forms and box near the entry booth.

A reminder that your Fair entries are due to your leader by July 1st. Also check with your leader for changes to the fair book. There are several errors and we will have a sheet with the corrections on them .

Leaders: remember that there is an important informational meeting for you at the courthouse on June 29th at 7 pm.

Are you interested in being a part of the EAC that guides the direction of your horse program? Do you have some great ideas that you wish the committee would look at? Why not be a member of the committee? After the Fair we will be starting to look for delegates to run for committee positions. We take both adults and youth. Keep watching the EAC newsletter and the 4-H family newsletter for more details and deadlines.

If you are not sure what we do, just ask any member and they can explain it to you.

Did you know that all of our EAC meetings are open to all of the clubs? You and any club members and parents are welcome to come. We meet the first Monday of each month at 6:30 at the courthouse in St. Johns, except for Aug.

The EAC has submitted a proposal to the 4-H Council to review and revise the equine cloverbud policy. If you see a 4-H Council member be sure to encourage them to consider it. You can find the names of the members in your Fair book.

Mint City Model Horse Show CANCELLED

Sadly, as of today I have canceled the show due to lack of entries. We may try to reschedule later this fall. I have been asked by the folks who put on the Novi Horse Expo to possibly have a show during the expo. Thanks for your support. Clinton County 4-H May Twilight Training Show

Thanks to everyone who braved the yucky weather to come out to our first Twilight Training Series show of the season. Even though it was cold and wet, everyone that came still had a good time. We were all very grateful that we got to ride indoors! Thank you to the Green Family and their club, Lynda, Judy, Diane, Kathy, Katy, Morgan, Becky, Jan and all the other kids and adults who pitched in to help set up, take down, and/or run the show. And thanks to Katy and Lauren for manning my camera and taking lots of pictures (blame the camera for the low quality, not the photographers!).

4-H E.A.C. News You Can Use

Happy Spring everyone! It looks like it has finally sprung in Michigan and Show Season has started. With the start of the Show Season comes a lot of different choices for showing, clinics and trail riding. The Clinton County EAC has put together 13 shows for you to participate in. You can find these listed on the Blog or you can get a copy of the entire schedule at the Extension Office. Please plan on supporting your horse program by joining us at these shows.

We have had to make some adjustments to the showbills that involve 5 to 8 year olds. The 4-H Council policy states that 5-6 yr.olds cannot ride and the 7-8 yr. olds will need to be on lead lines. We will include a Stick Horse class for the 5 & 6 yr. olds.

If you are interested in who is judging a show, the names will be posted on the Blog and they are listed on the showbills.

Donalee Pontius is doing a Mint City Model Horse Show on June 5th at Smith Hall. She is donating the proceeds to the EAC. At this time we need help with set-up, tear-down and concessions. We need workers Friday night and Saturday plus people to contribute food. If you can help, please contact her at 517-626-7557 or at donnapontius@yahoo.com.

We have rescheduled the Ride-a-Thon to June 15th. The ride will start at 5:30 pm and run until 9:00 pm. This is a fundraiser so please get those pledges! Please remember that there is a $5.00 charge to ride that includes your dinner. Please see the Blog for details and sponsor forms.

HAVE YOU SIGNED UP FOR THE TAYLOR FABUS CLINIC YET? If not, it is not too late. It is coming up this Sat. at the Fairgrounds. Taylor will be teaching Showmanship in the morning and Horsemanship in the early afternoon. The cost is $25.00 for the entire time and this includes your lunch. If you prefer only one session the cost is $15.00. Auditors are welcomed at $5.00 (does not include lunch). Concessions/lunch will be available for a donation. We are still in need of helpers to run the June 19th show. If you have not offered to help, please do so. We can not run this show with two people. Call Diane at 517-204-9175 or Jan at 517-749-6541.

Has your leader signed your club up to help with a show at Fair? All leaders please sign up to help at one of the shows during Fair week. If a club does not sign up they WILL be assigned a day and expected to work that show that day.

Remember our Fun Show that was held on Wednesday nights at the Fair? It has been changed. We will hold it on Monday night. This will give all of the kids a chance to meet, get the horses out of the stalls and have some fun. A few changes have been made. We will start at 5pm and the exhibitors must sign up for the classes on the class enrollment forms that are turned into the Fair Office when they pick their regular classes for the Fair. We will take drops on Monday but will not take any adds.

We have a photographer that will be taking pictures on Monday, Showmanship day at the Fair. These will be 3x5 and available for purchase at $4.00. Part of the money will be donated back to the EAC. Stay tuned for further details as Fair becomes closer.

We are trying to put together a hair and clothes clinic for the kids to learn to dress on a budget. This will take place on May 20th from 7 to 9. This will be $15.00 for youth and parents can attend for free. This will include refreshments and used show clothes will be for sale at rock bottom prices. It will be held at McCrumb's Quarter Horses in DeWitt. Please continue to check the Blog for more info.

Also for all Horse Leaders: there will be an important Fair informational meeting at the Courthouse on June 29th at 7pm. If you can not come please send a replacement that can make decisions. This is a mandatory meeting for all Horse Leaders!

Tracy Dominquez of McCrumb Quarter Horses in Dewitt will be hosting a Clothing and Hair clinic at her farm on Thursday, May 20th from 7 to 9 pm. She will be discussing how to keep up with show-ring style on a budget, and there will be a stylist to help teach how to style your hair. Cost will be $15 (bring mom to learn how to do your hair and she will get in free!), and there will some used show clothing available for sale. Highlights from last weeks Mandatory Meeting

This is for those of you who just didn't take notes, because I know you were all there, right?

-Horse registration forms (and spring enrollment forms) are due to club Organizational Leaders NO LATER THAN May 1st. We do NOT want Coggins test results at that time - those must be brought with you EVERY time you enter the fairgrounds (for shows and fair).

-The Fun Show classes have been moved to Monday afternoon, and exhibitors MUST sign up for those classes along with their regular classes - you can scratch classes the day of, but you WILL NOT be allowed to add.

-State Horse Show Delegate Applications are due July 1st (State Show is August 20-22). Please note that this year you need to turn an additional form to verify your volunteer hours. Both forms will be posted in the sidebar in .pdf format soon

-May 8th will be a Showmanship and Horsemanship Clinic - see post below for more info

-If you purchased a laminated back number last year and have not re-purchased that number, we will hold it until May 1st - afterwards that number will be available for anyone to purchase

-You must use the Townsend Rd entrance for all the horse shows.

Showmanship and Horsemanship Clinic

Taylor Fabus of the MSU Equine program is donating her time to put on a showmanship and horsemanship clinic for Clinton County 4-H members on Saturday May 8, from 10 am to 2 pm. The cost is $25 to bring your horse and learn from someone who has tons of technical and practical knowledge about showing horses. Contact Lynda Kissane at 989-666-3589.

4-H Equine Mandatory Meeting & registration due

MANDATORY MEETING for all youth involved in 4-H Equine project is next Tuesday, April 13th at 7:00p.m. at Smith Hall. You must be present or have someone there to gather info and sign-up where needed. At this meeting we will go over rules, opportunities, show and event assignments, awards, state delagate forms, and many other topics. We are going to have a mini bake sale at this meeting also! Please bring in bake goods to contribute.

4-H HORSE REGISTRATIONS. Attached you should find the form to register horses for the 4-H Program this year. Please fill these out and bring these to Mandatory meeting. Members may register up to four horses. You may want to register a back-up horse, as you may only use horses that you have registered as a 4-H project by means of the 4-H horse registration form.

Hippology Practice Game Night & County Test

The Clinton County Hippology Test will be held on Sunday, February 28, from 10 am to 12 pm at Smith Hall. Registration opens at 9:30 am. Kids leave for lunch, return at 1:30 pm. Children are NOT allowed to stay over at Smith Hall while we grade the tests. Awards will be handed out after the lunch break.

Testing will be written questions, Horse Judging from video, Labs, skill test with reins holds shown and quick-release knot tying, demonstrated by the child. A practice session, in the form of a Game Night, will be held Monday February 15, 7 pm, in the EOC Room of the Courthouse. Equipment will be there to practice rein holds and knot tying. All test information is from the Horse Science & Horses and Horsemanship books, the State 4-H Rulebook (see sidebar for link), and Lab kits. Two Lab kits are able to be borrowed for 3 days at a time from the Extension Office, for learning sessions. Call to reserve the kits. Here are information sheets that can be printed showing the different rein holds - English single rein, English double rein, western, and quick release knot.

4-H Equine Leaders Mandatory Meeting

The EAC is holding a special meeting on Wednesday, January 27^th at 7:00 pm in the EOC room at the courthouse. All equine clubs are asked to send a leader or parent representative (but no more than two) Clubs will be asked to sign up horse show & Fair week shows so be sure your representative is prepared to do so. If any club does not have a representative at the meeting a horse show WILL BE assigned to that club and that club WILL BE expected to work it. Fundraiser ideas will be talk about, Fair class/rule changes, etc. If you have a Fair class change or rule to submit, please do so in writing with the change and reason why.

2011 Calendar photo contest

How would you like to see your picture in a calendar? The EAC is having a photo contest to find photos to feature in a 2011 calendar that will be for sale next Christmas. Photos should be fun, candid shots that include 4-H members with their project horse(s), and can be group or individual. No professional photos will be excepted. Send your entries to Lynda Kissane, 3114 E Walker Rd, St Johns, MI 48879, 989-666-3589, by the Monday of Fair week. Include the names of all 4-H members in the photo, along with their club and their horses names. Contact Lynda if you have any questions.

MSU Pavilion the place to be February 5 and 6, 2010

MQHA and Michigan 4-H Horse Programs have teamed up to bring several educational programs to the MSU Pavilion the first weekend in February. The 33rd Annual Benefit Clinic will be held Saturday, February 6, from 11am to 3 pm. The theme is Perfecting the Patterns, focusing on showmanship and horsemanship, and the clinician is Christie Showerman of Norfolk Farms in Webberville. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Next up is the Horse Judging Workshop. Friday night from 7 to 9 pm will be a session the basics of evaluating Stock Type halter horses and developing oral reasons. Saturday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 will be a judging contest/clinic with an opportunity to give oral reasons. Classes include halter, western pleasure, and hunter under saddle, and there are divisions for juniors, senior, and adults/coaches. Also being held on Saturday is the new State 4-H Equine Public Speaking and Demonstration Contest. Visit the Extension website for all the details. Registration must be turned into the County office by January 15.
